Module 1

Module 1

Topics: Language acquisition and standards-based instruction

Outcome: Participants will be able to discuss the basics of the language acquisition process and standards-based instruction as it relates to the teaching of secondary mathematics.

Module 1 provides the basis of the theories and research regarding second language acquisition and standards-based instruction. This basis is the foundation of second language practices regarding ELs and how language can be differentiated in the classroom in order to provide ELs with the optimum success. 

Activities: 
 
1. Video Self-Introduction and discussion forum post.
2. Watch the PowerPoint presentation
3. Reflect on the PowerPoint through a written assignment

 

Module 2

Module 2

Topics: Content and language objectives

Outcome: Participants will be able to

 

  • Develop, define, refine, communicate, and assess content objectives for every lesson.
  • Develop, define, refine, communicate, and assess language objectives for every lesson.
  • Ensure objectives derive from and are aligned with English language proficiency as well as content standards.

 

This module will show you how to write content and language objectives, which are the basis for a sheltered instruction lesson.

Activities: 

 

  1. Watch the PowerPoint presentation
  2. Reflect via a written post
  3. Engage in a Chat room discussion.

Module 3

Topics: Using vocabulary strategies in the math classroom to enhance academic English as well as first language supports, and differentiating instruction through lesson adaptation and instructional modifications.

Outcomes: Participants will be able to

 

 

  • Identify academic vocabulary.
  • Implement various vocabulary strategies in their classroom.
  • Modify instruction through lesson adaptation and instructional modifications.
  • Scaffold instruction in response to students' individualized language and content learning needs.
  • Identify the language demands and domains embedded in lessons and explicitly address language use and needs for both teaching and learning.
  • Write a lesson about vocabulary instruction within a mathematics lesson.

 

Activities

  1. Watch the PowerPoint presentation
  2. Read one article
  3. Implement two of the math strategies described in the article
  4. Complete one of the Lesson Plan assignment options
