Module 1

Module 1

Topics: Introduction and Cultural Competence

Outcome: Explicitly identify and acknowledge the cultural competence, human capital, knowledge, experiences, and resources students bring to the classroom

Module 1 serves to put this course into context and lay the foundational elements for meeting the needs of our ELs. We will be introduced to Education Connections, examine perspectives of ELs, and look at an exemplar lesson. We will collect useful strategies along the way and use them in the final module to create a lesson plan. Participants will work on a lesson plan throughout the course and complete it during Module 5.

Module 2

Module 2

Topics: Language acquisition: academic language

Outcomes:

  • Develop, define, refine, communicate, and assess content objectives for every lesson.
  • Develop, define, refine, communicate, and assess language objectives for every lesson.
  • Ensure objectives derive from and are aligned with ELP as well as content standards.

Module 2 helps us to identify academic language demands. We learn about teaching content and language simultaneously while planning for various language abilities. Tools for identifying the stages of language acquisition and what students can do will be explored.
