After the success of the previous album, Pink Floyd was in a limited state – there were difficulties with the processing of accumulated material, because the “moon” devastated the four both physically and morally. No one could come up with anything trite. Speaking of the first sessions, Richard Wright described what was happening “the beginning of the ambiguity”, and Roger Waters called this time “painful”. Drummer Nick Mason considered the process of multi-track recording to a protracted and tiring, while David Gilmore was generally more interested in improving the existing material than in writing something new. Complex relationships with the media also began due to cynical and biliary articles written by Nick Kent and Pit Irskin, observers of the New Musical Express music magazine-journalists have criticized all new material recorded without the participation of Sid Barrett.
In 1974, 3 songs were born during concert tours: “Raving and Drooling”, “Gotta Be Crazy” and “Shine on You Crazy Diamond”. Waters and decided to develop the last song and turn into the title song of the new album, which was decided to devote to Sid Barrett. Roger also decided to devote the album to the criticism of the modern musical industry, which turned into a “car for making money”. In the first week of the new 1975, the musicians returned to the studio of Abby Road and began to work.
“Shine on” already in the course of the recording lasted about 26 minutes. However, Waters decided to experiment and divide the song into two halves and scatter them at the beginning and end of the album. Except Gilmor, all this idea was supported. After the first and in the second halves of “Shine on” lay songs about the same “musical business”. Thus, Waters wanted to show the take -off and fall of Sid. The recording lasted more than seven months with two breaks: one in April 1975, the other in June. There were no places on the songs “Raving and Drooling” and “Gotta Be Crazy” on the new album, so they were postponed to future releases. June 5, 1975. The SHINE ON You Crazy Diamond entry was coming to an end, the group was preparing for a concert tour in the United States. Suddenly a man entered the studio. What happened to him after leaving the group? In 1970, at the insistence of Emi and Harvest Records, he began his solo career and recorded two albums – The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (both in 1970). David Gilmore produced both albums. However, in 1972, the contract with EMI ended and after that SID did not release anything else. Many Barrett’s acquaintances tried to squeeze out something of him, but to no avail.
And here is June 5, 1975 … Waters was upset by the appearance of his old friend. According to some, two or three people in the studio cried. Sid came, talked with people, but no one understood what he was saying. It was an absolutely incoherent and instant speech.
Together with the group, he listened to Shine on You Crazy Diamond, sitting motionless until the end of the song. After listening, Barrett said (despite the fact that the song was already almost completed), that if necessary, he is always ready to help. He later joined the guests celebrating the wedding of Gilmore, and, having been in the cafeteria for some time, without saying goodbye, he left. After that, Nobody saw Sid Barrett again.
Gilmore called this meeting like this:

Wish You Were Here affects the theme of alienation, the problems of the musical industry and the personality of the former member of the group of Sid Barrett. Each song carried its idea in itself, but again they were musically connected, again each song flowed smoothly into another. And what was special in these compositions?
1)Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) – The beginning of the album. With the help of music and texts, Waters wanted to convey all the sadness associated with the absence of Barrett, called him a “crazy diamond”. The sticker was supposed to be glued onto the black shell, and already under it was contained the cover itself, in which the plate lay.
The main cover depicted a businessman, shaking the hand of his burning double (or other businessman). This scene, according to the authors, should symbolize the fact that people, due to fear of “burning” often try to hide their true feelings.
Album in a turn
The first presentation of some songs of the album took place on July 5, 1975 at the Musical Festival in the city of Navvort. But the concert turned out to be extremely unsuccessful due to unforeseen circumstances: at Roy Harper, someone stole a stage costume, which is why he broke the glass of the Pink Floyd van in a fit of rage;Before the performance of the field with the audience, two spitfire planes were to fly the time of World War II, but due to poor connection, the aircraft flew out too early, and the musicians, not having time to properly configure the equipment, were forced to start playing ahead of time;During the concert, serious problems with power supply arose, because of which Wright keys sounded completely different from them (at the slightest increase in volume, they began to fake very much, without falling in tone). After the release in the UK, the album was sold in the amount of 250 thousand. copies of the plate and the first position in the chart was reached. Sales were so good that there was literally nothing left on the shelves and EMI had to supplement the party. About 900 thousand were received in relation to the American publication. orders, so already in the second week the album reached the first line in the rank of Billboard 200. Until 1991, Wish You Were Here was Pink Floyd as quickly sold by Pink Floyd.
But criticism of authoritative publications was ambiguous. Rolling Stones journalists said that the potential of the idea “Shine on” was blurry and not completely. Some critics on the contrary praised the title song, calling it almost symphonic. Despite this, in 2003, the Rolling Stone Album was included in the list of five hundred best and put on the 209th line, and for many listeners the album is considered one of the best. The album took 4th place in the TOP-25 list of the best albums of progressive rock according to Progarchives.com, and “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” took second place in the list “25 best songs of all time in the genre of progressive rock”.
My opinion about the album: This album began my acquaintance with Pink Floyd, or rather with the song Shine on You Crazy Diamond. This acquaintance was implemented thanks to … yes .. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. But I don’t see anything shameful here, because in my environment few people listened to Pink Floyd and it is unlikely that I would have started listening. There is a very difficult reason, but the essence is: Norton Warburg Group (financial planning) has invested 3.3 million pounds (16.9 million pounds in the current value) from the Pink Floyd budget for investment in new enterprises. This reduced the taxes of musicians. However, the strategy failed because these same enterprises were soon closed and investments went collaps. However, my personal top “The best”, The Wall takes 3rd place, giving way to Wish You Were Here and The Dark Side of the Moon. Yes, the album is not my favorite, it seems to me not as lamp as the previous ones. But listening to The Wall was pleasant, in some places I personified myself with the hero. So “amazing”, without any doubt.
