Institute Description
At this three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) Institute on CAL's widely-used What's Different about Teaching Reading to Students Learning English? professional development program participants will receive the complete training materials, recommendations on how to deliver What's Different? trainings, hands-on experience using the materials, training tips and much more.
This institute is designed for elementary and middle school ESL and reading specialists who have experience providing professional development to teachers. High school teachers working with newcomers or students acquiring early literacy skills will also benefit. An ideal training team includes an ESL and a reading specialist. The ideal recipients of your training will be teachers who serve students learning English in the general education classroom.
What's Different? incorporates key findings from the National Literacy Panel (2006) on teaching comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonetic awareness and phonics to English learners. Connections will be made with college and career readiness standards (such as CCSS), including reading and writing in the content areas.
